ASO KUMAMOTO TRAVEL BLOG

Hello, my name is Sarah from Hankyu Travel and today I will be telling you about my trip to Aso Kumamoto in December of last year.

This has been my second time in Aso, but the beautiful landscape, delicious food and friendly
people just never get old. Aso Caldera is located in Kumamoto prefecture on Kyushu Island
and surrounds an active volcano, Mt. Nakadake. Due to the volcano and the tireless efforts of the
local community, the soil and water around Aso is very rich in nutrients which fosters a unique
agricultural environment, in which cattle, crops and humans can flourish.

I am a “Dorfplanze” (village plant) as we say in German, so living in the big bustling city of Tokyo
is not always easy. The fresh air, roaring hills and wide plaines of Aso were a very welcome refreshment,
especially after Covid lockdowns. We took walks in the high grass of the Furubochu around the volcano
crater and Daikanbo outer caldera ring, learning about the culture of Aso.

I also got the chance again to eat Akaushi Beef!
It is in the same category of high class beef as Kobe or Hida beef and in my humble opinion
the best of them all (and more reasonably priced). When we later during the tour were able to feed
some of the Akaushi cattle with grass and pet their heads,
I made sure to say “thank you” for providing such a delicious meal to me.

The tour was a nice reset and I purposely did not check my phone or any social media during the whole tour,
in order to not just reset my body, but also my mind.

A personal highlight for me at the end of the tour was making my very own bamboo light
at CHIKAKEN in Kumamoto City. Crafting was always my forte and drilling the holes in the bamboo
to make beautiful patterns that light up was just way too much fun!

If you have participated in our virtual fam tour and seminar on the 26th last week,
you will know all about the fantastic sights and aspects about Aso.
For those that have not seen our seminar, check it out under this link.
